Our mission team sat around the makeshift table in a rustic cabin in a remote village in northern Saskatchewan — an hour and a half's flight beyond the end of the road. Before we began the meal together, our leader asked if anyone had anything profound to share. Caught by surprise, we exchanged sheepish looks and finally managed something shallow. After beginning several meals with this routine, he finally revealed that by "profound" he simply meant we were to share a verse or thought from God's word. In time, beginning the meal with something profound became even better than starting the meal with dessert.

By virtue of being created in the image of God, anyone can occasionally say something profound. But to make a routine of doing it, to fill the moments with words that bless and inspire and comfort and encourage and restore, the mind must first be filled with profound thoughts. The fountainhead of such thoughts must reasonably be an infinite mind, comprehensive in understanding, eternal in experience, perfect in expression, Divine.

I long for my calligraphy to be more than mere words on walls. If there is no message in the words themselves, then embellishing them with beautiful writing and artwork only serves to disguise the vanity of time spent in their contemplation. When the words themselves are profound, brush and quill attract the eye and open the gate to the mind where these words can then have their intended effect. You will notice that the majority of my work finds its origin in sacred scripture. Only eternity will fully unveil the profundity in these living words. It would thrill me personally if you are drawn to these words by my efforts and then, find for yourself, as I have, the immeasurable treasure in them. "They are more to be desired than gold, yes, more than much pure gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. By them is Your servant warned and in keeping them there is great reward."
